Some people get a sense of fulfillment when cooking their own food for their own parties. One perfect way to hone cooking skills is to learn the basics of barbecuing. Lighting up that fire on the grill is tricky though. You need to bear some do's and don'ts in mind to assure safety whilst you continue with the cooking endeavour.
1. Do keep your grill at a distance
Grilling, in any form, produces fire and smoke and it is for this matter that you should consider grilling at some distance far away from your home. You can set-up the griller at least 10 metres away from your house. You do not want burning your fixtures just because you want to enjoy grilled barbecue.
2. Do clean your grill regularly

How is this connected to your safety? Grilling food over a barbecue grill, whether with the use of charcoal or gas, will lead to some fat and grease build-up on the grilling plates. This build-up will lead to possible flare-ups later on. It is best then to keep the grill clean and make sure you do that after every use.
3. Do have some things in handy for flare-ups
Flare-ups are usual with barbecuing but do consider minor flare-ups only and not those major ones. You can control minor flare-ups by having a spray bottle with water near you. When you notice minor flare-ups, you can use the spray bottle to tame it. There is an added advantage to using water for such flare-ups. This is the fact that water does not spoil the food thus it will not ruin the taste of your barbecue.
4. Don't turn on the gas valve when your grill lid is closed.
This is a mistake basically committed by many grillers. Some would think it is okay to turn on the gas valve even when the grill is closed. But the truth is you should never do that. Why? It is simply because doing so will lead to possibilities of major fire flare ups that can blow on your face. Turning on the valve before opening the lid will already bring pressure to the griller and will lead to a fireball formation once you light the grill.
5. Don't leave your grill unattended
You can think of several scenarios on leaving the food you are cooking. It is either the food burns or at the worst, your house will burn. You should never do that ever again. The same principle applies when you are grilling food. Never leave the griller because you will never know when will fire double in size. To avoid the need to leave the grill later on, you should make sure that you have prepared all the materials and food you need for grilling.
6. Don't overload the grill
Many people would often overlook this essential reminder when grilling. Some would say they are in a hurry and they have to be ready before guests come in. Others would have that presumption that it would be easier to finish the task when the grill is filled with several pieces of barbecue at a time. This is without knowing that when the grill is overloaded with food, fat drips will build up thus possibilities of larger flare-ups can occur. This can result to burnt barbecue, not the delectable taste you are expecting.
