If you’ve ever had a gala night with friends, then you know for a fact what it means to clean your barbecue grills. It is hectic and irritating. It also takes time. But you don’t have to tire yourself cleaning the grills like everyone else does. There are shortcuts that can come in handy and help you clean the grills and grill gates with ease.
Brushing
This may sound easy but it isn’t. People make common mistakes such as using the wrong brush on the grill or using the wrong brush with the wrong soap. Get a cleaning brush from a store specifically meant for cleaning BBQ grates. The brushes are made or brittle wire brush that can’t scrub off the stainless coating on your grill. Then remember to brush your grates every time you have a BBQ event. That way, you will have an easy time cleaning them. Also, never put anything inorganic on your grill like Styrofoam or plastic. You will have an easy time scrubbing them off the grill. Then note that such substances release toxic fumes which are of course health hazards.
Burning
It is a little known yet effective BBQ grate cleaning method. The method is ideal for removing stubborn food particles on the grates. Simply cover the grates with an aluminum foil evenly. Then set the grates on a relatively high temperature and close the lid. Fling the lid open after 10 to 15 minutes before brushing off all the dirt and ash.
Using onions
Use a half cut onion to clean the grill after burning it as described above. The onion will remove all stubborn particles with ease and restore the shine of your grates. Be sure to use onions every time you use your BBQ.
Soaking
There are two simple ways to soak your BBQ grates. The first method involves using baking soda and dish soap. Remember to soak the grates after they have cooled. Fill a sizeable bucket with hot water then add half a cup of baking soda and a cup of dish soap solution. The solution should form lather before you can soak your grates in it. Soak the grates for 30 minutes to one hour. Then scrub off the stains with a steel brush and rinse with a hose.
The second soaking method involves use of white vinegar, baking soda and ammonia. Simply take a large plastic garbage bag then put your BBQ grates inside the bag. Put 3 cups of white vinegar and 3 cups of ammonia in the bag. Mix the solution thoroughly before adding one cup of baking soda. Make sure the bag is tightly sealed to allow the grill to get coated evenly with the solution. Let the grates stay in the bag for a night. Remove the grates and wash off with warm water.
Cleaning the grills
This is not often required but it is still a smart thing to do for hygiene purposes. You may have to clean the grills occasionally if you do your BBQs from time to time. The process is simple though time consuming. You will need a wire brush, water, spray bottle, vinegar and cotton cloth. Mix two cups of cold water with two cups of vinegar. Stir the solution before pouring into a spray bottle.
Using the wire brush, remove all particles and stains from the grill. Spray the grill with the vinegar solution as you scrub. Then take the cotton cloth and put at least two drops of vinegar on it. Use the cotton on any part that seems to have stubborn food particles. Allow the barbecue grill to dry for at least an hour before you can use it again.
